The Senate will on Wednesday screen and confirm the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, alongside other Service Chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu.
The decision followed President Tinubu’s formal request, conveyed in two separate letters to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read during Tuesday’s plenary.
In the letters, the President invoked Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, urging the Senate to give the nominations prompt consideration.
After reading the correspondence, Senator Akpabio referred the request to the Committee of the Whole and scheduled the screening for Wednesday.
President Tinubu had on Sunday appointed Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, former Chief of Army Staff, as Chief of Defence Staff, replacing Gen. Christopher Musa.
Other appointees include Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.
