Senate Confirms Abubakar Yelwa for a Second Four-Year Term as MD/ CEO N-HYPPADEC)

The Senate has confirmed Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa for a second four-year term as managing director and chief executive officer of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).

The confirmation by the Senate followed the presentation and consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Power presented by the Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, APGA, Abia South.

Abaribe said “That the Senate do Receive and Consider the Report of the Committee on Power on the confirmation of the nomination of Mal. Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa for a Second Four (4) year term as Managing Director/CEO of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).”

Presenting the report, the former Senate Minority Leader who noted that the committee’s findings confirmed that Yelwa met all requirements set out in Section 93 of the Electricity Act, 2023, as amended, said, “The nominee is well qualified and has the relevant experience to be reappointed as managing director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission.”

According to Abaribe, the nominee was articulate in his responses during the screening and that security checks revealed no negative information against him.
According to the report, the committee unanimously agreed that Yelwa possessed the competence, integrity, and experience required for the position.

He said, “The committee, having carefully screened and determined the nominee’s credentials, hereby recommends that the senate confirm the re-nomination of Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa as managing director and chief executive officer of N-HYPPADEC for a second and final four-year term.”

In his contribution, Senator Lola Ashiru, APC, Kwara South who described Yelwa as “well known and extremely useful,” noted his performance in the past four years.

“This man is well known to us. He has been there for the past four years. We find him extremely useful. I will quickly appeal to the president of the senate to adopt this report so that the man can settle down and continue his work,” Ashiru said.

On his part, Senator Adamu Aliero, APC, Kebbi central, also backed Yelwa’s reappointment, saying he had “wonderfully performed to the expectations of the benefitting states.”

Also in his contribution, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, PDP, Sokoto South who described Yelwa as a long-time associate, praising his dedication and competence, said, “Mallam Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa and I have come a long way right from our days in the university. Once he is given a task, he performs optimally. I believe in his capacity to do very well.”

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio put the nomination to a voice vote, and senators confirmed Yelwa for another term.
