Nigeria Emerges Africa’s Second-Largest Domestic Air Market

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Nigeria is now the second-largest domestic passenger market in Africa, recording over 10.5 million domestic travellers and a 10 per cent growth.Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, disclosed that the Murtala Muhammed International Airport recorded one of the strongest air traffic performances on the continent in 2025, with an 11.8 per cent increase. She added that Lagos also ranked among Africa’s leading cargo hubs, achieving a 34.4 per cent growth in cargo operations.Kuku made the remarks at the Airports Council International Africa Regional Conference and Exhibition held in Luanda, Angola.According to her, both the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, ranked among the top 10 airports in Africa for domestic passenger traffic in 2025.She noted that the development reflects Nigeria’s growing role in shaping air travel across the continent.“This sends a very important message: Nigeria is not only preparing to host Africa; Nigeria is also actively participating in shaping the future of African air connectivity,” she said.Kuku added that the growth in passenger traffic and cargo movement highlights increasing pressure on airports to modernise, collaborate, and build more efficient and resilient systems.“We are seeing growth in passenger traffic, stronger cargo performance in key gateways, and rising pressure on airports to modernise, collaborate, and build systems that are more efficient and more resilient. These conversations are not abstract—they are critical to the future of aviation in Africa,” she stated.
