NCDC Confirms Three New Lassa Fever Cases in Edo, Ondo

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed three new cases of Lassa fever in Edo and Ondo states, according to its Situation Report for Week 34 (August 18–24, 2025).

The figure shows a slight decline from the five cases recorded the previous week.

With the latest infections, the cumulative total for 2025 has risen to 857 confirmed cases and 160 deaths, representing a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.7 percent—higher than the 17.1 percent CFR reported within the same period in 2024.

So far, 21 states have reported at least one confirmed case across 106 local government areas. NCDC noted that 90 percent of all confirmed cases were concentrated in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi states.

The report further revealed that the most affected age group remains those between 21 and 30 years. No new infections were recorded among healthcare workers during the week under review.

NCDC also observed a downward trend in both suspected and confirmed cases compared to the corresponding period in 2024.
