The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a thorough investigation into allegations that senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) received land and cash gifts from a top cabinet minister under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The party warned that the claims, which surfaced recently and continue to generate public debate, could undermine confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system if not urgently addressed. In a statement issued by its factional National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP described the reports as troubling and called on INEC to respond with full transparency.According to the party, the allegations suggest a possible attempt to influence the electoral body, raising concerns about its independence at a critical time in the country’s political cycle.“The media was awash last week with reports alleging that a minister offered land and cash gifts to senior officials of the Commission. This development is disturbing and raises serious concerns,” the statement said. The PDP further questioned why such alleged benefits would be directed at election officials, while workers in other key sectors such as healthcare, education, and security have not received similar gestures. It urged the leadership of INEC to publicly clarify the situation, noting that even the Commission’s chairman has reportedly been mentioned in the allegations.“We call on the INEC Chairman to come clean on these claims involving top officials and himself, as widely alleged,” the party stated. The opposition party cautioned that failure to address the issue decisively could erode public trust in the Commission and weaken confidence in future elections. It stressed the need for INEC to uphold the highest standards of integrity, urging the electoral body to demonstrate transparency and impartiality in both its actions and public communication.
