Chaos erupted at Kasuwan Gwari, a major market in Minna, Niger State, on Monday when government enforcement agents clashed with suspected vandals, leaving one person feared dead and several others injured.
The confrontation broke out after officials attempted to stop scavengers riding motorcycles loaded with scrap materials believed to be from questionable sources. The suspects reportedly resisted arrest, triggering a violent free-for-all during which dangerous weapons were freely used.
Several injured persons were rushed to Minna General Hospital for treatment, while traders in and around the market were thrown into panic.
The incident comes just a week after Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago warned members of the Scrap/Metal Collectors Association against vandalizing public property under the guise of scavenging, threatening strict enforcement measures.
Confirming the clash, Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said at least 10 suspects have been arrested.
“Operation Flush patrol teams intervened, but the suspects mobilized, attacked both policemen and NISTMA officials, damaged a police vehicle, barricaded the road, and set tyres on fire. Reinforcements were deployed, and minimum force was used to restore order. Over 10 suspects were arrested and are under investigation,” he stated.
