OSOGBO — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Osun State has dismissed reports that it is withdrawing from Saturday’s governorship election or entering an alliance with another political party.
The party urged voters to disregard reports claiming that its governorship candidate, Dr Najeem Salaam, had withdrawn from the race.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the state spokesperson of the ADC, Abosede Oluwaseun, said the party remained committed to participating in the election and was confident of victory.
The statement described reports that ADC had stepped down for another party as “a blatant lie and a desperate political fabrication.”
“ADC has not stepped down for anybody, and we will not step down for anybody. Our position remains clear and unequivocal: those who desire electoral victory under the ADC banner should come and join us. ADC is not joining anybody,” the party said.
The party pointed to recent campaign activities by its national leaders as evidence of its commitment to the election.
It said its National Chairman had visited Osun to campaign at Freedom Park, while its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, had also campaigned for the party’s candidate.
The party also noted that its National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, had publicly supported Salaam.
According to the ADC, Salaam had continued his campaign across towns and communities in the state.
“These are not the actions of a party preparing to step down; they are the actions of a party fully committed to victory,” it said.
The party urged those responsible for the alleged misinformation to stop misleading voters.
“We therefore call on those behind these shenanigans, falsehoods and politically motivated rumours to stop misleading the people. ADC is in this election to win, and Dr. Najeem Salaam Iwaloye remains the candidate to beat,” it said.
The party reiterated that its doors remained open to supporters who believed in its platform.
“But let it be stated once again, for the avoidance of doubt: ADC has not stepped down, ADC is not stepping down, and ADC will step down for nobody,” the party said.
