Gov. Yusuf employs 4,315 teachers to breach Teachers -Pupil Ratio

By Ahmed Musa

KANO — Governor of Kano state, Abba Yusuf has employed no fewer than 4,315 teachers under the Better Education Delivery for All, BESDA programme.

The Governor who announced this while distributing letter of appointments to the teachers, also hinted that plans were underway to recruit additional 2,616 teachers soon.

He said the recruit of the teachers is a move to address the teacher to pupil ratio in the state.

He admonished the newly recruited teachers to teach with passion, serve with integrity, and dedicate themselves selflessly to nurturing the minds and shaping the character of the children.

According to him, “Since the inception of this government, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that every school in Kano State is functional, conducive, and capable of providing quality education.

“To strengthen the system further, I have directed the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, to immediately commence the recruitment of an additional 2,616 qualified teachers, which by the grace of Allah is coming in due course.

“My belief is that this will also help us achieve and maintain the prescribed teacher to pupil ratio across the state.

“Equally, I have mandated the Ministry of Education and all its agencies to intensify monitoring and evaluation of our schools to guarantee quality service delivery, adequate maintenance of facilities, and proper utilization of resources.

“On our own part as government again, we are constructing new schools, rehabilitating dilapidated ones, and massively distributing books and writing materials across all the 44 local government areas.

“We are also investing heavily in teachers’ welfare because we recognize that the quality of any education system is determined by the quality of its teachers.

“And for this reason, we have promoted thousands of teachers and staff on a scale unprecedented in the history of Kano State. We have also disbursed the sum of N200 million under the Teacher Loan Scheme just to cushion financial burdens of the teachers. We are providing school support officers with 440 motorcycles as well as 300 state-of-the-art tablet computers to enhance supervision, agility, and productivity.

“In recognition of the importance of school safety, we have directed all the 44 local government councils to employ 17,000 watchmen for basic and post-basic schools across the state. Let me again reiterate that our commitment is to transform education and restore its glory at the bedrock of human and societal development.

“I also strongly remind our newly appointed teachers that your responsibilities extend beyond the teaching and receipt of letters. You are to build character, instill balance, recognize, maintain ethical standards, and prepare the evolution of the next generation of leaders with the highest forms of qualities,” Governor Yusuf said.

Earlier, the Chairman, Kano State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir said the board places paramount importance to the welfare and professional development of the teachers and every education manager.

He however, attributed achievement so far recorded in the education sector in the past two years to the political will and passion of the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
