FG Constitutes Committee to Review Proposed $200bn Gas, Power, Rail Project

The Federal Government has inaugurated a technical committee to undertake a comprehensive review of a proposed $200 billion Integrated Gas, Power and High-Speed Rail Project.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who inaugurated the panel on Thursday, said the ambitious initiative is aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transport system, strengthening energy security, and boosting its position within the regional economy.

In a statement by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Akume described the project as a potentially transformative investment capable of driving economic growth and enhancing infrastructure development across key sectors.

He explained that the proposal is designed as a multi-phase programme integrating gas development, power generation and transmission, alongside a 4,000-kilometre high-speed rail network linking major economic hubs such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.

According to him, the initiative could significantly improve transportation, stimulate industrialisation, and promote national integration if successfully implemented.

The committee has been mandated to thoroughly evaluate the proposal by examining relevant documents, verifying claims by promoters, and assessing its technical, legal, and environmental implications.

It is also expected to provide objective, evidence-based recommendations to guide government decisions.

Akume urged members of the committee to carry out their assignment with professionalism and diligence, stressing the need to engage stakeholders and adhere to global best practices.

The panel, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office, comprises representatives from key ministries including Transportation, Petroleum Resources, Finance, Justice, and Environment, as well as agencies such as the EFCC, DSS, and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Speaking on the project, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of De-Sadel Nigeria Limited, Samuel Ukoh, described the proposal as a game-changer for Nigeria’s infrastructure landscape.

He disclosed that the plan features a 4,000km dual-track high-speed rail system expected to cut travel time between cities by up to 75 percent and connect all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Ukoh added that the project also includes an integrated energy component, with plans to generate about 3,500 megawatts of electricity to power the rail system independently of the national grid.
