FG Cracks Down on Fake Ambassadors, Warns Offenders Face Prosecution

By Sarah Mattew ABUJA-

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to Nigerians falsely parading themselves as ambassadors, declaring that the prestigious title is neither for sale nor subject to private conferment, and that offenders will face prosecution.

The warning comes amid ongoing preparations for the deployment of a new batch of Nigerian envoys, following significant progress in securing diplomatic clearances from host countries.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed that over 25 countries have granted approval known in diplomatic terms as agrément for Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominees.

He explained that agrément is a mandatory process through which host nations assess and formally accept diplomatic representatives before their posting.

According to Ebienfa, the ministry has concluded arrangements for a three-day induction programme scheduled for April 27 to 29, after which the ambassadors will be deployed to their respective missions.

“We have received more than 25 agreements from countries where ambassador designates have been sent, and plans have been concluded for a three-day induction programme. Deployment will begin immediately after the exercise,” he said.

He noted that the induction would acquaint the envoys and, where applicable, their spouses with diplomatic protocols, expected conduct in host countries, and the policy direction of the current administration.

However, the ministry raised alarm over what it described as a growing trend of individuals and organisations illegally conferring ambassadorial titles on Nigerians for financial gain.Ebienfa revealed that some groups offer fake diplomatic appointments in exchange for large sums, often with promises of privileges such as diplomatic passports, immunity, and preferential treatment at international airports.

He stressed that only the President, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has the constitutional authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors, warning that any contrary claim constitutes impersonation.

The spokesperson further disclosed that some impostors have gone as far as presenting themselves to foreign governments and international organisations as official representatives of Nigeria, thereby tarnishing the country’s image.

“Ambassadorial titles are not conferred through payment or membership of any non-governmental organisation,” he emphasised.Ebienfa also revealed that authorities have uncovered cases involving fake diplomatic passports, forged identity cards, and cloned diplomatic vehicle number plates.

He said the ministry is collaborating with security agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, the police, and intelligence bodies, to track down and prosecute those involved.

Clarifying the distinction, he noted that while individuals may serve as brand ambassadors for companies or organisations, such roles do not confer any diplomatic status or authority.

“You can be a brand ambassador for a company, but you cannot attach the title ‘Ambassador’ to your name in a manner that suggests diplomatic authority,” he said.

On Nigeria’s broader diplomatic engagements, Ebienfa acknowledged funding constraints but expressed optimism that the Federal Government would provide the necessary support to strengthen foreign missions.

He added that efforts are ongoing to deepen collaboration with the National Assembly and address outstanding obligations linked to previous international commitments.

The ministry reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard Nigeria’s diplomatic integrity, warning that any act capable of bringing the country into disrepute will be decisively dealt with.
