Tension is escalating in Oyo State as rumours of an impeachment plot within the State House of Assembly have snowballed into a full-blown political crisis, exposing cracks among lawmakers.
What began as speculation has rapidly gained traction, drawing the attention of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which is closely monitoring the unfolding developments.
At the heart of the crisis is a reported meeting held at the residence of Governor Seyi Makinde, where lawmakers allegedly gathered amid concerns over moves capable of straining relations between the executive and legislative arms of government.
Following the meeting, divisions within the Assembly have become more apparent, with some lawmakers publicly stating their positions.
While a number of members, including the Deputy Speaker, have denied any involvement in an impeachment plot, others have remained silent, fuelling speculation of deepening internal rifts.
The Chief Whip, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, has been among the most vocal, dismissing claims of participation in any plot to destabilise the state.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, he insisted he was neither invited to nor aware of any impeachment plan.
Oyekola further disclosed that discussions at the governor’s meeting included claims that the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, had been approached by influential political and traditional figures over his future political ambitions, with alleged offers of financial inducement, which he reportedly declined.
Reaffirming his loyalty, Oyekola pledged support for Governor Makinde’s administration, stressing his commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and progress in the state.
His position reflects a growing trend, as several lawmakers have begun openly aligning with the governor.
Despite these declarations, uncertainty persists over the true state of affairs within the Assembly. Observers say the silence of some lawmakers may signal deeper divisions yet to surface.
Adding another layer to the situation is the resurfacing of earlier warnings by former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, whose predictions of possible political instability are now drawing renewed attention.
For the APC, the crisis presents both risks and potential political opportunities, as the party weighs its response while events continue to unfold.
With more lawmakers expected to speak in the coming days, attention remains fixed on Oyo State.
The direction the crisis takes whether towards reconciliation or further discord could significantly shape the state’s political landscape in the near future.
