Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, on Tuesday raised alarm over what he described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy, declaring that the opposition would resist any attempt to undermine democratic institutions.
Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja, Mark said Nigeria’s democratic space is shrinking and must be defended through unity and collective action across political divides.
The convention, which proceeded despite alleged attempts to frustrate it, quickly evolved into a rallying point for opposition figures and supporters amid mounting concerns over political interference and institutional pressure.
“We are at a critical moment. Democracy will not die on our watch,” Mark declared, setting a defiant tone for the gathering. He alleged that forces opposed to a united opposition deployed administrative and institutional obstacles to disrupt the convention, including denial of venues and interference through official channels.
“Through the courts, through institutions, through bureaucratic obstruction, they sought to stop this convention from happening. They removed our names from official portals.
They denied us preferred venues, but we are here,” he said.
Mark also expressed concern over recent developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission, warning that the handling of democratic processes could erode public trust if not properly managed.
“In an ever-shrinking democratic space, the ADC will not bow, we will not cower, and we will not retreat,” he added.
Beyond the immediate controversy, the former Senate President framed the situation as part of a broader struggle for Nigeria’s democratic future, urging opposition leaders across party lines to unite.
“We say to all opposition leaders in the country, regardless of political party, come, let us work together to save our country.
The challenges we face go beyond partisanship,” he said.Mark noted that the ADC is gaining momentum, particularly among younger Nigerians who are increasingly demanding accountability and a shift in governance.
“This generation is asking tough questions of leadership, and we are emerging as a credible alternative because our vision aligns with their aspirations,” he stated.
He stressed that the party’s ambition extends beyond winning political power, emphasizing a commitment to people-centered governance.
“In ADC, we shall return politics to its true purpose improving the lives of the people.Nigeria’s resources must serve the majority,” he said.
Highlighting the party’s internal structure, Mark pointed to successful congresses conducted nationwide as evidence of growing grassroots strength and organisational stability.
He urged newly elected party leaders to embrace service and accountability, warning against authoritarian tendencies within party ranks.
“Leadership must be defined by service and accountability not exclusion, but expansion; not control, but coordination,” he said.
Mark further insisted that no individual would be above the party, pledging strict accountability for all elected and appointed officials under the ADC platform.
“No member of this party, no matter how highly placed, will be bigger than the party.
We will hold every official accountable,” he said.Describing the moment as pivotal, he called on members to remain disciplined and united, noting that the decisions taken now could shape Nigeria’s future trajectory.
“Future generations may look back at this period as the point when we chose a different path — when this great country rose to meet its destiny,” he said.
Declaring the convention open, Mark expressed confidence in the ADC’s direction and its role in redefining Nigeria’s political landscape.“This is the moment we have chosen to change Nigeria,” he concluded.
