Yusuf Pledges to Clear N15.6bn Backlog of Councillors’ Allowances by November

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has vowed to clear the outstanding N15.6 billion backlog of severance, gratuity, and furniture allowances owed to former councillors across the state’s 44 local government areas before the end of November.

The debt, accumulated during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is being settled in phases by the current government.

Speaking at the disbursement of the second tranche of N5.6 billion to 1,198 councillors who served between 2018 and 2020, Governor Yusuf stressed that the payments were not politically motivated but a rightful entitlement of those who had served the state at the grassroots.

“This is about honouring sacrifice and service,” Yusuf declared. “Many of our former councillors waited patiently for what rightly belongs to them. They gave their time, energy, and sacrifice in service to the people, and their efforts must never be forgotten.”

The governor disclosed that the first tranche of N1.8 billion was paid in May to 903 councillors who served between 2014 and 2017. With the second cycle now completed, he assured that preparations were in top gear to disburse the final N8.2 billion by the second week of November, covering 1,371 former councillors.

“By fulfilling this obligation, we are sending a clear and powerful message: the sacrifices of those who served at the grassroots will always be remembered. This is justice, this is equity, and this is the spirit of our administration,” Yusuf said.

Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, commended the move, stressing that political differences should not hinder entitlements. He said Governor Yusuf’s action sets a worthy precedent for others to follow.
