Fresh indications emerged on Wednesday that former President Goodluck Jonathan may be considering a return to presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
The development followed the announcement by a group known as the “Coalition for Jonathan 2027,” which disclosed plans to mobilise 10,000 youths across the country to urge the former president to contest the presidency against incumbent President Bola Tinubu in next year’s election.
In a statement issued late Wednesday night, the group said it would stage a peaceful march on Thursday to persuade Jonathan to formally declare his interest in the race.
According to the statement, the planned mobilisation is a continuation of an earlier visit by supporters to the former president on April 8, 2026.
“This is a follow-up to our earlier mammoth crowd visit to the former president on April 8, 2026, during which we vowed to return to confront him if he fails to declare his interest in the 2027 race,” the group stated.
The coalition, however, did not provide further details regarding the planned march or Jonathan’s response to the growing calls.
Jonathan had previously been linked with a possible presidential comeback ahead of the 2023 election after several political groups and influential figures reportedly urged him to contest, though he eventually declined.
As of the time of filing this report, it remained unclear whether the former president would heed the latest calls to enter the race.
There is also uncertainty over the political platform he could use should he decide to run, especially given the timelines already set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties to conduct primaries and submit candidates for the election.
