ABUJA – Loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari, under the banner of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), have formally declared support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections, deepening divisions within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The declaration came during a closed-door meeting at Atiku’s Abuja residence, where former CPC state chairmen pledged allegiance to the opposition leader and announced their readiness to merge into his coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The CPC bloc, widely seen as Buhari’s most steadfast political base, accused the Tinubu-led APC government of abandoning the ideals that united the coalition that propelled the party to power in 2015.
“We are the true followers of Buhari, and we are here today to reaffirm our commitment. The CPC bloc remains intact, and we will not allow Buhari’s legacy to be lost. We are now ready to merge into the new political platform that God has chosen for us, appointing you, Sir, as our leader,” one of the leaders told Atiku.
The move, they argued, was necessary to preserve Buhari’s legacy and restore credibility to Nigeria’s political leadership. Another CPC chieftain, drawing a sharp contrast between Buhari’s allies and the current APC leadership, said: “If you see former AGF Malami or ex-Kaduna Governor El-Rufai, you don’t need to be told they are CPC. Compare that with the faces in power today, and you’ll see the difference.”
In his remarks, Atiku welcomed the group, describing the endorsement as a major boost to his coalition-building efforts. He assured them of an inclusive political platform that would reflect the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
“This meeting represents a continuation of your struggles and your journey. With your support, we can translate it into electoral success. Together, we will build a government responsive to citizens’ needs and committed to peace and unity,” Atiku said, urging them to mobilise their supporters for the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The defection of Buhari’s core loyalists marks one of the most significant political realignments since the APC’s formation in 2013 and could reshape the balance of power in the North ahead of 2027.
