Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek has released a preview of its latest large language model, DeepSeek-V4, marking a major step forward in the global AI competition between China and the United States.
The Hangzhou-based startup unveiled two versions of the system—V4-Pro and V4-Flash—on Friday, positioning the model as a strong challenger to leading AI systems from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
The company says the new model delivers significant improvements in reasoning, programming, and “agentic” capabilities, allowing it to carry out more complex tasks with greater autonomy.
DeepSeek also claims the V4 series features a massive upgrade in efficiency and scale, including an expanded context window capable of processing extremely large volumes of text, making it better suited for long-form analysis, coding, and research tasks.
A key feature of the new release is its emphasis on cost efficiency. The company says V4 is designed to deliver high-end performance while reducing computing costs, a strategy that helped its earlier models gain global attention for competing with Western systems at lower prices.
The V4 model is also closely tied to China’s push for technological self-reliance. Reports indicate it has been optimized to run on domestic Huawei AI chips, reducing reliance on Nvidia hardware and strengthening China’s homegrown AI ecosystem.
DeepSeek, which rose to prominence after its earlier R1 model surprised the industry with strong performance at low cost, is now seeking to solidify its position as one of the leading players in the rapidly intensifying global AI race.
While the company has touted V4 as competitive with top-tier closed-source models, independent benchmarks and full technical details are still being evaluated by the wider AI research community.
