Northwest University, Sokoto (NWUS), has alerted prospective students, parents and guardians to a fake admission notice circulating on social media, warning them against fraudsters seeking to exploit applicants desperate to gain admission.
The university, in a statement issued Thursday by its Directorate of Communications, Public Affairs and Protocol, said the fraudulent notice falsely claimed that the institution had released its 2026/2027 first and second batch admission lists.
According to the university, the fake message directs applicants to telephone number 07073682223 and identifies an individual as “Dr Mrs Mary”, who allegedly offers to help candidates check their admission status, process clearance, pay school fees and secure admission in subsequent batches.
NWUS described the notice as fraudulent and completely unauthorised, stressing that it did not originate from the institution.
The university said the development was particularly concerning because the perpetrators were targeting prospective students and their families at a period when many applicants were anxiously awaiting admission decisions.
It emphasised that admission into the university is not conducted through private arrangements with individuals and that no person has been authorised to use a personal telephone number to offer admission, process clearance, collect school fees or guarantee placement.
The institution urged applicants to disregard the telephone number and instructions contained in the fake notice and avoid transferring money or disclosing personal, financial or admission-related information to unauthorised individuals.
It also warned candidates against people claiming to have access to admission lists or promising to facilitate clearance, secure admission or guarantee placement in exchange for money.
The university advised that such claims should be treated as potential fraud unless independently verified through its authorised communication channels.
It said all legitimate information concerning admission lists, procedures, school fees and other requirements would be released through official university channels.
NWUS also urged parents and guardians to educate their children and wards about the dangers of dealing with unverified admission agents, especially as fraudsters increasingly use social media and telephone communication to target admission seekers.
For verification, members of the public were advised to contact the university directly on 0704-269-9999 instead of relying on information circulated through personal accounts, unofficial groups or unidentified agents.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and credible admission process and urged the public to treat the circulating notice as fake.
