The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has donated a 750KVA transformer to Okerewa community in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, as part of its community development initiatives.
The intervention is expected to address the community’s prolonged electricity challenges and improve the operating environment for residents and small businesses.
Presenting the transformer the PENGASSAN National Treasurer, Comrade David Owan, who led the delegation, described the occasion as a significant moment for the people of Okerewa.
Owan said the project was part of the association’s commitment to giving back to society and extending its corporate social responsibility beyond the petroleum industry.
He said improved electricity supply would enhance residents’ quality of life while providing an enabling environment for businesses to grow.
“The gesture was part of PENGASSAN’s commitment to giving back to the society and demonstrating its corporate social responsibility, CSR, beyond the petroleum industry,” he said.
Owan urged residents to protect the transformer from vandalism and ensure proper maintenance.
He said, “I pray that this transformer will solve the problem it was meant to solve. This transformer will help those who are doing barbing, hair dressing and other small businesses.”
Representatives of the community thanked PENGASSAN for the intervention, describing it as a major response to years of poor and epileptic power supply.
They pledged to protect the facility and ensure it served its intended purpose.
The PENGASSAN delegation also visited the Lens Foundation and Special Needs School in Rumuokwurusi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, where it donated materials to support persons living with special needs.
Owan encouraged the beneficiaries to remain confident and develop their talents, stressing that physical challenges should not prevent anyone from contributing to society.
“Remain confident in your abilities, develop your talents and continue to contribute your quota to the development of society,” he told the students.
He added that “every individual has a role to play in nation-building irrespective of physical challenges.”
A representative of the school, Mrs Adebayo Adio, expressed appreciation for the gesture, saying the donated materials would support the students’ development.
“Most of them are extremely brilliant. Some of them who don’t want to go to school can do business and PENGASSAN has items for them also,” she said.
The two interventions, according to PENGASSAN, form part of its broader efforts to promote community development, social inclusion and support for vulnerable Nigerians.
