The Federal Government has congratulated South Africa on its Freedom Day celebration while urging authorities to strengthen protection for foreign nationals residing in the country.
In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described April 27 as a defining moment marking the end of apartheid and the birth of democratic governance in 1994.
The government noted that the 2026 celebration marks 32 years of uninterrupted democracy and reflects South Africa’s commitment to rule of law and equality.
It also recalled Nigeria’s historic support for South Africa’s liberation struggle.
“ Nigeria stood at the forefront of the global campaign against apartheid, offering political, diplomatic, and material support,” the statement said.
Despite strong bilateral ties, Nigeria expressed concern over recent attacks on foreigners.
“While Nigeria fully respects South Africa’s sovereignty, we are deeply concerned about reports of attacks on foreign nationals,” the ministry stated.
“As brotherly nations no African should feel unsafe in another African country.”
The government urged South African authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard lives and maintain the long-standing relationship between both countries
