The Bayelsa State Police Command is set to commence a statewide traffic enforcement operation codenamed “VELVET” on Thursday.
The exercise, directed by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is aimed at tackling traffic violations and improving public safety across the state.
The operation will target vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles that are unregistered or improperly registered, as well as motorists using fake, covered or obscured number plates.
Commissioner of Police Ajao Saka Adewale directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and personnel deployed for the operation to enforce the law against offenders.
In a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the commissioner stressed that the operation must be conducted professionally and with respect for citizens’ fundamental rights.
“No form of extortion, harassment, or intimidation of road users will be tolerated.”
The command advised motorists and other road users to regularise their documents and comply fully with traffic regulations before the exercise begins.
“The Command warned that it will not hesitate to take appropriate lawful action against persons found violating the regulations,” the statement read.
The police urged residents to cooperate with officers during the operation and support efforts to maintain law and order.
