The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), working with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has foiled an attempt to vandalise railway infrastructure at a siding serving the Dangote Steel Rolling Mills in Osogbo, Osun State.
The NRC said the affected siding formerly served the Osogbo Steel Rolling Mills, which is currently inactive.
According to a statement issued by the NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the Principal Track Officer in Osogbo received a report on Friday, August 28, 2026, about the ongoing vandalisation of railway materials at the location.
The officer subsequently moved to the site with security personnel, including members of the NSCDC Railway Command.
The suspected vandals reportedly fled after sighting the security operatives.
A search of the area later led to the recovery of nine oxygen gas cylinders allegedly being used in the vandalisation operation.
The NRC said the recovered railway materials and the surrounding area had been secured by security personnel.
Reacting to the incident, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kayode Opeifa, commended the security personnel for their vigilance and prompt response.
He described the operation as another major achievement in efforts to protect railway infrastructure from vandals and economic saboteurs.
Opeifa directed security agencies to intensify surveillance around the Dangote Steel Rolling Mills siding and other railway corridors across the country.
He also called for stronger cooperation between security agencies and the NRC to prevent theft and destruction of railway assets.
The NRC boss urged residents living along railway corridors to report suspicious activities around tracks, stations and other railway facilities.
He stressed that railway infrastructure remained critical national assets whose protection was essential to safe rail operations, sustainable services and economic development.
Opeifa assured that the NRC would continue supporting security agencies in efforts to eliminate vandalism and other activities capable of disrupting railway operations.
The corporation reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security partnerships to safeguard railway infrastructure nationwide.
