The Federal Government has directed contractors handling the Abuja-Keffi Expressway project to shift major construction activities to night hours in order to ease the persistent gridlock along the busy corridor.
Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Bello-Goronyo, gave the directive on Thursday during an inspection of the Abuja section of the project. He explained that the worst bottleneck lies on a three-kilometre stretch on the Abuja-bound lane, where flooding and heavy traffic have compounded the suffering of commuters.
According to him, the Bola Tinubu-led administration is mindful of the hardship faced daily by road users and is determined to deliver urgent relief.
“As you are aware, this work started in December. Out of the 43.6 kilometres from the Keffi bound, 41 kilometres have already been completed up to Binder, representing about 50 per cent completion,” Goronyo said.
He disclosed that immediate palliative measures are being executed to divert water and create a more accessible route, but stressed that such works would only be carried out at night to prevent further disruption during peak traffic hours.
The minister warned contractors against delays, insisting that the completion deadline for the project remains sacrosanct.
“The contractor must fully mobilise to this site to maintain this route because of the heavy traffic. We are not happy with the suffering of commuters, and we don’t want to see persistent hold-ups anymore,” Goronyo said.
While commending progress achieved on the Keffi-bound section, the minister urged contractors to accelerate work on the Abuja-bound stretch to ensure timely delivery.
