The Federal Government has launched the revised Basic and Senior Secondary School Curricula under the National Education Sector Renewal Initiative,NESRI.
The review, spearheaded by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council ,NERDC,and supervised by the Federal Ministry of Education, was developed through a competency- and outcome-based approach designed to strengthen the country’s education system.
According to officials, the reform was carried out through a step-by-step, participatory process to guarantee inclusivity, national ownership, and global relevance.
The exercise commenced with a nationwide needs assessment across 12 states to identify gaps in the system, followed by zonal dialogues in all six geopolitical zones.
Learners, teachers, parents, civil society groups, employers, religious and traditional leaders, policymakers, and development partners all contributed to the process. Their inputs shaped a curriculum framework reflecting national policies, development priorities, and societal aspirations.
The framework was ratified on October 10, 2024, during the 68th National Council on Education ,NCE meeting chaired by the Ministers of Education. The meeting was attended by state commissioners of education, SUBEB chairmen, professional bodies, civil society organisations, and development partners.
Curriculum design and development involved subject specialists, teacher educators, industry experts, and curriculum professionals, who worked through four stages: content selection and standardisation, drafting, critique and refinement, and final editing.
Since its approval, the Ministry has implemented the curricula in phases over the past nine months. This included pilot testing in selected schools, teacher orientation, and nationwide training delivered both physically and virtually to prepare educators for effective classroom delivery.
The revised curricula, which blend competency- and outcome-based approaches, are expected to better prepare learners for contemporary and future challenges, while aligning with global standards and addressing Nigeria’s developmental needs.
In a statement Monday night, the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, assured Nigerians that implementation remains on track and inclusive.
She added that learners will be better equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed and contribute meaningfully to national development.
