The Federal Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following renewed anti-foreigner protests and reported attacks on Nigerians and their businesses in the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the South African envoy had been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Spokesperson of the ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the meeting would provide an opportunity for Nigeria to formally express its deep concern over the recent developments, which it warned could strain the longstanding diplomatic ties between both countries.
According to the ministry, discussions will centre on the ongoing protests by different groups in South Africa, as well as documented cases of alleged harassment and attacks targeting Nigerian citizens and their businesses.
The Federal Government acknowledged growing anxiety among Nigerians regarding the safety of their compatriots in South Africa but urged citizens to remain calm.
“The Ministry is aware of the rising concerns among Nigerians over the treatment of their nationals in South Africa. However, it urges the public to remain calm and reassures that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa,” the statement said.
