A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Federal Government of bearing responsibility for any violence that may occur before, during, or after the 2027 general elections.
The party also defended Governor Seyi Makinde’s controversial reference to the historic “Operation Wetie,” insisting it was misinterpreted.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party said the remarks were intended as a warning.
“The use of history served as a caution and advisory… of the unmitigated crisis that their actions and inactions can result in,” it said.
It added that only a “guilty aggressor” would interpret the statement as incitement.
“The federal government and the APC… have since been reacting with the panic of an animal cornered by its own misdeeds,” the statement read.
The PDP warned that current political developments mirror past crises.
“The events that led to the sad incident of ‘wetie’… are not just similar but identical,” it stated.
The party accused the APC of fostering authoritarian tendencies, warning that pressure on opposition forces could provoke resistance.
“When pushed to the wall, people have no other direction to go but forward,” it said.
It concluded by assigning responsibility for any breakdown of order to the ruling party and national institutions, stressing that democracy must be protected.
