A fresh leadership crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, as a faction of the party announced the suspension of prominent members, including former governor and national leader, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
The faction, led by Kennedy Odion, also listed former governor and National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor; newly elected state chairman, Dr. Tony Alile; Senator Yisa Braimoh; factional chairman, Dr. Nosa Ehima; and six others among those affected.
In a statement, Odion said the suspensions were carried out in line with provisions of the party’s constitution, citing various articles.
He accused the affected members of acts such as insubordination, anti-party activities, and actions capable of causing division within the party.He further alleged that they were involved in creating parallel structures and participating in unauthorised groups not recognised by the party’s constitution.
However, Odigie-Oyegun dismissed the development, describing it as “laughable” and unworthy of serious attention.In a swift counter, the newly elected state chairman recognised by the party’s national leadership, Dr. Tony Alile, rejected Odion’s claims, insisting that Odion himself had been expelled by the party’s National Convention.
Alile maintained that the National Convention, being the highest decision-making body of the party, stripped Odion of any authority to act on behalf of the ADC, including issuing suspensions.
He explained that although Odion’s tenure was initially expected to run until May 12, the convention’s decision effectively removed him, leaving the party’s affairs in the hands of the secretary pending the transition.
Alile added that Odion no longer has the legitimacy to convene meetings or speak for the party, describing his actions as invalid and of no consequence.
The development highlights deepening divisions within the Edo ADC, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership and authority in the state.
