Fresh violence has erupted in Benue State as suspected armed militia attacked Sati-Ikov community in Ushongo Local Government Area, killing four persons including three mourners and abducting two others.

The victims were reportedly ambushed on Saturday night while returning from a burial ceremony, in what residents say is part of a disturbing pattern of attacks in the area.

Sources said several others sustained gunshot injuries during the нападение, while the assailants looted valuables, including motorcycles and personal belongings.

Among those abducted were a well-known patent medicine dealer and a Point of Sale operator in the community.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Majority Chief Whip of the Benue State House of Assembly, Dr. Simon Gabo, described the attack as alarming and indicative of escalating insecurity.

“According to information I received from my people around 4am on Sunday, the victims had attended a burial and were attacked on their way back,” he said.

“The armed men shot and killed three of them, took their bags, robbed other residents and abducted two persons. The victims were all young men,” he added.

Gabo alleged that the attackers were militia elements operating from neighbouring Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, accusing them of repeatedly crossing into Ushongo communities.

“These armed men cross the River Katsina-Ala. The terrain is difficult, mountainous and covered with thick forest which makes their operations easier,” he explained.

The lawmaker revealed that the attack was part of a recurring wave of violence.
“Prior to this, we have had similar incidents almost every other week one person was killed and three others sustained gunshot injuries,” he said.

He confirmed that security agencies had been alerted, adding: “I reported the incident, and the DPO moved to the area with security operatives this morning.”
Police authorities had yet to issue an official statement as of press time.
