Obi Taunts Tinubu Over Power Grid Collapse, says No Light, No Second Term
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following yet another nationwide power outage caused by the collapse of the national electricity grid.
The blackout has left millions of Nigerians in darkness, disrupting small businesses that rely heavily on electricity for survival.
Obi reminded the president of his campaign promise to deliver uninterrupted power within four years, recalling Tinubu’s own words: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in the next four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.”
In a statement titled “If I Don’t Give You Constant Electricity in the Next 4 Years, Don’t Vote for Me for Second Term,” the former Anambra State governor accused the administration of presiding over more grid failures and power outages than any in Nigeria’s history, despite massive investments in the sector.
“The impact is glaring,” Obi said. “Nigeria has spent more on power generation than countries like Vietnam, Egypt, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, yet while these nations have doubled capacity and transformed their economies, we remain stuck around 5,000 megawatts.”
Obi argued that generating at least 10,000 megawatts could raise Nigeria’s GDP by 50 percent, unlock industrial growth, and create millions of jobs. Instead, he faulted the government for prioritizing projects like coastal highways over critical power investments.
“Rather than empowering businesses, factories are shutting down, jobs are disappearing, and ordinary Nigerians are left in darkness,” Obi said, urging Tinubu to refocus on electricity generation and distribution as a catalyst for economic growth.
He concluded with his familiar refrain: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
