A stakeholders’ meeting of rival factions within the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) descended into violence in Lagos, leaving four members with gunshot injuries and several others abducted.
The clash occurred in the Okoko area, sparking panic among residents.
RTEAN Lagos State Chairman, Shamusedeen Ajala, accused the union’s National President, Musa Mohammad, of refusing to relinquish office after more than eight years.
He alleged that the crisis was escalated by one Seyi Bamgbose, who allegedly mobilised thugs to disrupt the meeting.
“The crisis stems from a dispute over leadership, and attempts to forcefully take over the Lagos branch triggered the violence,” Ajala said.
However, a counter statement by the union’s Lagos Vice Chairman, Adeola Adeyemi, blamed Ajala for the incident.
“A serious security breach occurred at the RTEAN Annex Office… gunshots were fired, leaving at least four members with serious injuries,” the statement read.
Eyewitnesses alleged that armed individuals stormed the meeting venue and attacked participants.
The union has called on security agencies to intervene urgently.
“This incident represents a grave threat to public safety. Authorities must secure the area, rescue abducted persons, and conduct a thorough investigation,” the statement added.
