2027: APC Intensifies Kano Strategy, Courts Shekarau Amid Power

Rotation Debate As political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stepped up efforts to reclaim Kano State, reaching out to former governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, in a strategic move to strengthen its foothold in the North.

APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, led a delegation to Shekarau’s residence in Mundubawa, Kano, where he urged the former two-term governor to return to the ruling party and play a leading role in securing victory in the state and across the region.

Yilwatda acknowledged the party’s loss of Kano in the last election, describing it as a major setback with wider political implications, and stressed the need to avoid a repeat in 2027.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to Northern stakeholders to support the completion of the South’s second term in office, noting that such an arrangement would ensure a smooth power rotation back to the North by 2031.

According to him, the North must remain united in making strategic political decisions that would shape its future, insisting that fairness demands allowing the current Southern leadership to complete its tenure.

The APC chairman further described Shekarau as a grassroots politician with national influence, whose return, he said, would significantly boost the party’s chances not only in Kano but across Northern Nigeria.

Responding, Shekarau confirmed that his current party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing deep internal challenges, which he likened to a “serious cancer.”

He said consultations are ongoing with key stakeholders, including members of his Shura Council, to determine his next political move.

The former governor added that he would make his position known in the coming days after concluding the consultation process.
