Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment: FG to Release Report on Cause Within 23 Days
Abuja – The Federal Government has assured that the findings on the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment of August 26, 2025, will be made public in 23 days, following an independent probe by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
The passenger train, designated AK1, derailed at Asham Train Station around 11:07 a.m., shortly after leaving Idu Station, Abuja, at 9:45 a.m. and making a brief stop at Kubwa Station at 10:04 a.m.
According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), five coaches went off the track after passing a switching point, with the forward locomotive and two coaches overturning. The rear locomotive and last coach, however, remained intact.
The train was carrying 583 passengers and crew. While early reports suggested about 50 casualties, official figures later confirmed that 12 passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries. All injured victims were treated at the scene and later moved to medical facilities. No deaths were recorded.
Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, praised the prompt intervention of rescue teams. “The emergency teams acted promptly to secure the site and ensure the safety of passengers,” he stated.
The derailment inflicted damage on the tracks, sleepers, and switching mechanisms, forcing the temporary suspension of train services along the corridor.
The NSIB, operating under the Railways (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Regulation 2024, is leading the inquiry. Its Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh, confirmed during a briefing in Abuja that investigators were carrying out a comprehensive review.
“Our team is conducting a thorough examination of the site, rolling stock, and operational records. Interviews with passengers, crew, and witnesses are ongoing. We aim to provide a comprehensive report within 23 days,” Badeh said.
He explained that a Draft Final Report would first be shared with stakeholders for consultation before the official Final Report is released. “Safety recommendations arising from the investigation will be communicated to prevent future accidents,” he added.
