Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco have taken a major step to enhance bilateral aviation relations with the signing of a revised Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) in Marrakech.
The agreement, signed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on the sidelines of the Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS), is expected to boost connectivity and unlock new opportunities in air transport between both nations.
During the symposium, Keyamo also held high-level engagements with key international aviation stakeholders, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union (EU), focusing on strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector.
According to a statement by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, Keyamo paid a courtesy visit to the President of the ICAO Council, Toshiyuki Onuma, where discussions centred on Nigeria’s aviation reform agenda and workforce development.
Onuma commended Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Masterplan and lauded Keyamo’s presentation on “The Future of Aviation’s Workforce,” delivered at the event, while reaffirming ICAO’s support for Nigeria in areas such as capacity building and aviation workforce development.
In his remarks, Keyamo reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to adhering to ICAO standards and global best practices, particularly in safety, security, and sustainability.
The minister also met with a European Union delegation, where both sides explored opportunities to expand cooperation in technical assistance, regulatory strengthening, and safety oversight, building on existing frameworks.
The newly signed BASA with Morocco is designed to modernise air transport relations, strengthen operational structures, and create wider opportunities for airlines and aviation authorities in both countries.
It is also expected to enhance connectivity and drive growth in trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and Morocco.
