FIRS Boss: Tinubu’s Tax Reforms Key to Economic Recovery, Stronger Revenue System

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has described the tax reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration as vital to Nigeria’s economic recovery and long-term growth.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at the opening of a one-day capacity-building workshop for State House correspondents, Dr. Adedeji said the newly enacted Tax Reforms Act represents a major step toward building a more efficient, equitable, and accountable tax system.

Represented by his Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, the FIRS boss stressed that aligning government policies with effective communication is crucial to driving national development.

“The Tax Reforms Act is not just about improving revenue collection. It is about strengthening the system to deliver efficiency, fairness, and accountability,” he said. “These reforms are essential to Nigeria’s broader agenda of economic recovery and growth.”

He underscored the role of the media, particularly the State House Press Corps, in shaping public perception and building trust in government policies. According to him, accurate reporting of tax reforms would enhance public awareness, encourage voluntary compliance, and deepen citizens’ confidence in the fiscal system.

The training, organized by the FIRS, was designed to help journalists better understand the objectives of the Tax Reforms Act, the structure and mandate of the Nigeria Revenue Service, and the wider implications of fiscal reforms for national development.

“This initiative is about more than improving media coverage,” Dr. Adedeji added. “It is about equipping the press with tools to foster informed public debate, strengthen democracy, and support government accountability.”

He commended partners and facilitators of the workshop, expressing optimism that the knowledge gained would translate into more accurate reporting, stronger insights, and a closer connection between government and the public.
