The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a sweeping reorganisation of the Police Monitoring Unit in a move aimed at boosting operational efficiency, strengthening internal oversight, and reinforcing discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
As part of the restructuring, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar, has been appointed to head the reconstituted Monitoring Unit, where he will oversee its operations and implementation of reforms.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed that the overhaul was driven by the need to reposition the unit to better deliver on its core mandate, address operational gaps, and strengthen its role as an internal accountability mechanism.
According to him, the restructured unit has been streamlined to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time supervision of police personnel and operations across commands and formations nationwide.
He added that the new framework integrates key investigative and monitoring responsibilities in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.
Before his new role, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Commands, where he handled several high-profile cases and contributed to improving investigative processes.
Widely regarded as a professional and community-focused officer, Abubakar is known for promoting transparency and public engagement in policing.
The IGP stressed that the reform initiative is targeted at deepening professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the Force, noting that the Monitoring Unit will be pivotal in detecting operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing reforms, institutional strengthening, and the delivery of a more accountable and citizen-centred policing system.
