Motorists have been urged to exercise heightened caution and ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition as the rainy season gathers momentum across Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, gave the advisory in response to forecasts predicting extended rainfall and potential flooding in parts of the state.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Odunsi Afolabi, the Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, said proactive safety measures were critical to reducing road accidents during the wet season.
According to him, projections by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency indicate a variable rainfall pattern in 2026, with Ogun State likely to experience prolonged rains. He added that alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment have also identified the state as vulnerable to heavy rainfall and flash floods.
Ogunjobi emphasised that road safety during the rainy season depends largely on the condition of vehicles and the attitude of drivers, urging motorists to carry out routine checks before embarking on journeys.
He advised drivers to replace worn-out windshield wipers for better visibility, ensure tyres have adequate tread to maintain grip, and confirm that all vehicle lights are functioning properly. He also stressed the need to regularly test braking systems, noting that wet roads significantly increase stopping distances.
The FRSC boss attributed many wet-season crashes to human error, calling on motorists to adopt safer driving habits. He urged drivers to reduce speed during rainfall and maintain a wider distance between vehicles to allow sufficient reaction time.
Ogunjobi also warned against driving through flooded roads, noting that such waters often hide potholes and dangerous debris.
He further advised motorists to avoid unnecessary risks during heavy downpours, recommending that drivers pull over at safe locations when visibility becomes poor.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads and called on all road users to adhere strictly to safety guidelines throughout the rainy season.
