The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned indefinite nationwide strike following fresh commitments by the Federal Government to address key welfare issues.
The decision was reached during an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on April 25, 2026.
NARD had earlier planned the strike over the reversal of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT), but reversed its decision after the government agreed to implement the allowance starting from April salaries.
The NEC also acknowledged assurances on the payment of outstanding salary arrears and approval of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).
The association noted progress on settling 19 months’ arrears, describing it as a significant step.
However, it expressed concern over delays in house officers’ salaries and called for urgent resolution.
In a statement signed by its leadership, NARD insisted on full implementation of agreements, warning of further action if commitments are not met.
The association commended President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders for their intervention.
