Tinubu Govt to Link All Nigerian Cities by Rail, Roads — Shettima

…. says modern rail key to sustaining Africa’s logistics hub status

The Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to connecting every Nigerian city through railways and highways, describing the move as critical to industrialization and sustaining Nigeria’s dominance as Africa’s logistics hub.

Declaring open the 2nd International Railway Conference in Abuja, Shettima said the revival and modernization of rail infrastructure is central to reducing over-reliance on road transport, curbing accidents, and ensuring seamless movement of goods and raw materials across the country.

“The challenge ahead of us is to lead this race as the logistics hub of Africa by reviving and revitalizing our railway services. Railways offer safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly alternatives, reducing carbon emissions while reinforcing our commitment to sustainable development,” Shettima said.

He highlighted ongoing projects — Lagos–Kano, Kano–Maradi, and Port Harcourt–Maiduguri — as part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that private sector participation remains crucial for timely delivery and sustainability.

“Our aspiration is for a nation where industries can move products to markets, and raw materials can flow seamlessly to factories without hindrance,” the VP added.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project as a “bold and visionary” step toward transforming Nigeria’s transportation landscape, while Transportation Minister Said Ahmed Alkali underscored the sector’s role as a driver of economic growth.

Other speakers, including Petroleum Resources (Gas) Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo and Bureau of Public Procurement DG Adebowale Adedokun, pledged support, noting that modern rail development would spur trade, investment, and job creation.

The conference, attended by ministers, lawmakers, industry leaders, and traditional rulers, was hailed as a platform to strengthen partnerships and position Nigeria as a continental leader in logistics and infrastructure.
