Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Senate over reports it may suspend political campaigns in parts of Northern Nigeria due to insecurity.
In a statement, Atiku warned such a move could undermine democracy.
“Let it be clearly stated: the right to vote… is fundamental and cannot be abridged,” he said.
He argued that restricting political activity would amount to disenfranchisement.
“You cannot cure insecurity by silencing the voices of the people. Democracy must not become a casualty,” he added.
Atiku called on authorities to clarify their stance and ensure inclusive participation in the electoral process.
“Nigeria must never descend into a situation where elections are shaped by exclusion,” he warned.
