Angwan Rukuba Attack: Benue Govt Evacuates Over 600 Students from UNIJOS
The Benue State Government has begun the evacuation of its indigenes studying at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following the recent deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba and nearby communities in Jos.
The attack, which claimed several lives, has heightened tension in the area and raised concerns over the safety of students.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, the government said the evacuation was approved by Governor Hyacinth Alia as a precautionary measure to protect Benue students.
The university had earlier postponed its first semester examinations and directed students to vacate hostels and surrounding areas from Thursday, April 2, 2026, due to the worsening security situation.
Governor Alia explained that the decision to evacuate the students was driven by the need to safeguard their lives and wellbeing.
“This decision became necessary as it concerns the lives and welfare of our people, especially the future leaders studying outside the state,” he said.
The government disclosed that over 600 students have already been successfully evacuated and transported back to Benue State, while additional buses have been deployed to convey more students and other indigenes willing to return.
Governor Alia further assured citizens of his administration’s commitment to their safety, noting that he is in constant communication with the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to restore peace and ensure those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
“We are working tirelessly with relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book and that normalcy is restored as soon as possible,” he added.
