Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has said his administration is leveraging technology to strengthen security, improve governance and drive economic growth, noting that digital innovation has given security agencies an operational advantage in tackling insecurity across the state.
The governor stated this while receiving members of the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos, ahead of the Society’s international conference.
Mutfwang commended the NCS for choosing Plateau as the venue for the conference despite security concerns and negative narratives about the state, describing the decision as a demonstration of confidence in his administration.
“I want to thank you for the confidence you have in us by agreeing to allow us to host this conference. I appreciate those who stood firmly to discountenance negative information about Plateau State,” the governor said.
He disclosed that his administration was making significant progress toward establishing a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centre in Jos through partnerships with development organisations.
According to him, about 600 successful applicants have already been interviewed and are expected to commence work once the project becomes operational.
The governor said the state government would continue to deepen the adoption of digital platforms to improve governance and public service delivery.
“As part of the public sector, we will continue to promote e-governance, e-commerce and everything we can do in that sector,” he said.
Speaking on security, Mutfwang revealed that the deployment of technology has significantly enhanced the effectiveness of security agencies, citing a recent attack in Riyom Local Government Area where security operatives gained a tactical advantage through the use of digital tools.
“We are leveraging technology to confront the security challenges, and because of the deployment of technology, we were able to have advantage over them,” he stated.
The governor also called on Nigerian information and communications technology professionals to take the lead in addressing the challenges associated with the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), while harnessing its immense opportunities for national development.
Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Computer Society, Prof. Aliyu Sirajo, commended Governor Mutfwang for his commitment to digital transformation and described Plateau as an ideal host for the Society’s international conference.
Sirajo said the decision to hold the conference in Plateau followed an independent security assessment, which found that the situation on the ground did not reflect the negative reports circulating about the state.
“The selection of Plateau State was the most peaceful and seamless. After our assessment, the report was that we did not see what the media was portraying and what people were saying,” he said.
He also praised the hospitality of the people of Plateau and attributed the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the state to the governor’s leadership.
According to him, the conference is expected to boost Plateau’s digital economy by attracting technology firms, investors, innovators and digital entrepreneurs to the state, while creating opportunities for collaboration and innovation in Nigeria’s ICT sector.
