Plateau Crisis: IGP Disu Orders Sustained Security Operations After Jos Attack
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has carried out an operational visit to Plateau State following the recent attack on Angwan Rukuba community in the Nasarawa Gwong area of Jos North Local Government Area, which claimed several lives.
The police chief condemned the attack and, on arrival, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to commiserate with the government and people of the state over the March 29, 2026 incident. He subsequently visited the affected community for an on-the-spot assessment.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the police activated an immediate and robust operational response upon receiving distress calls.
The response included the deployment of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Usman Nadada, and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Police Mobile Force, Francis Iwu, alongside eight units of the Police Mobile Force, the Special Intervention Squad, and other tactical and intelligence teams. These efforts were carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, including the military.
Police authorities said the situation has been significantly de-escalated through coordinated operations and sustained engagement with local government officials, community leaders, and youth groups. Security personnel remain strategically deployed to maintain order, while intelligence-driven efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible for the attack.
The Inspector-General stressed that operations would continue until full normalcy is restored. He also warned youths in Jos against engaging in reprisals or vigilantism, noting that such actions could worsen tensions and derail ongoing peace efforts.
In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang commended the Nigeria Police Force for its swift response, particularly acknowledging the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, and the role of the Police Mobile Force in containing the crisis.
The governor, however, called for structural reforms in the nation’s security architecture, including the establishment of state police to improve operational effectiveness. He also advocated the adoption of modern policing tools, such as night surveillance drones with infrared capabilities, to enhance security operations.
Highlighting the importance of intelligence, he urged the State Criminal Investigation Department and the State Intelligence Bureau to intensify intelligence gathering. He further pledged continued logistical support to the police, while noting that challenges such as difficult terrain, manpower shortages, and the distance between armouries continue to hinder effective security coverage.
The Inspector-General assured that he would brief President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the situation as part of ongoing national security coordination efforts.
He urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while encouraging them to provide credible information to security agencies to support ongoing operations. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the country.
