The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has scheduled May 12, 2026, for the inauguration of its newly elected state executives, as the leadership led by former Senate President David Mark moves to strengthen its control of party structures nationwide despite lingering internal disputes.
The planned inauguration signals a decisive effort by the Mark-led camp to formalise its authority across the states, even as controversies, legal battles and rival factions continue to trail the recently concluded congresses in parts of the country.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC leadership congratulated the newly elected officials, describing the congresses as peaceful and compliant with constitutional provisions.
“The African Democratic Congress congratulates all newly elected state executives and chairmen across the federation on the successful conduct of their congresses,” Abdullahi said.
He noted that the process reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy, transparency and the rule of law, while commending members and stakeholders for what he described as a disciplined and orderly exercise.
The party confirmed that the inauguration would proceed as scheduled, subject to any adjustments by its National Working Committee. “The formal inauguration of the newly elected state executives will take place on May 12, 2026, or on a later date to be communicated by the National Working Committee,” the statement added.
Abdullahi urged the incoming officials to remain committed to the party’s ideals, stressing the need for unity and discipline in building a credible political alternative.
“As you prepare to assume office, we urge you to remain steadfast in your dedication to the party’s vision. The task ahead demands unity, discipline and a sustained commitment to strengthening the party’s structures nationwide,” he said.
The development comes amid a deepening leadership crisis within the ADC, marked by parallel congresses, court interventions and reported suspensions in several states, casting doubt on the uniformity of the process.
Nevertheless, the Mark-led leadership has maintained that the congresses conducted under its supervision are valid and has pressed ahead with the inauguration as part of efforts to stabilise the party and reposition it ahead of future elections.
