The Labour Party on Wednesday witnessed a surge of political activity as no fewer than seven aspirants seeking legislative positions at both national and state levels purchased expression of interest and nomination forms on the first day of sales for the 2027 general elections.
The party’s national secretariat in Abuja was a hive of activity, with aspirants from different parts of the country trooping in and out of the office of the National Organising Secretary to complete documentation and obtain forms.
Those who picked up forms on the opening day include Sir Basil Maduka (Senate, Imo State), Hon. Reuben Inunuji (State Assembly, Taraba), Arc. Njoku Chigozie (State Assembly, Imo), Rejoice Lengaya (State Assembly, Taraba), Okafor Anthony Ikenna (House of Representatives, Anambra), Bala Samuel (House of Representatives, Taraba), and Abdulrazak Haruna Magaji (State Assembly, Taraba).
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, the National Organising Secretary of the party, Oluchi Opara, described the turnout as encouraging and a strong indication of growing confidence in the party.
“The level of interest shown by aspirants on this first day is impressive. It is a sign of greater things to come,” she said.
Opara said the enthusiasm reflected continued public belief in the party’s ideology and manifesto, adding that the party was optimistic that this would translate into electoral success in 2027.
She also assured aspirants of a fair and transparent primary process, noting that the party would ensure a level playing field in constituencies where consensus could not be reached.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has commenced implementation of its revised timetable for the 2027 general elections in line with constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act 2026, and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the sale of nomination forms will run from May 6 to May 16, 2026.
The statement added that submission of completed forms is scheduled for May 17 and 18, while screening of aspirants will begin with State House of Assembly candidates on May 18, 2026.
The party said it has already notified INEC of its congresses and national convention timetable as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
