The convoy of the Cross River State Deputy Governor, Peter Odey, was on Sunday involved in an accident along the Ikom-Calabar highway near Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr Local Government Area.
The incident occurred as Odey and members of his entourage were returning to Calabar from Obanliku Local Government Area, where they had attended an official engagement.
The Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Fred Abua, confirmed that the deputy governor was unhurt.
He said the press crew vehicle and a Hilux vehicle in the convoy were affected by the accident.
According to Abua, the crash occurred after the brakes of the press crew vehicle failed, forcing the driver to veer off the road.
Another source said the Government House press bus, which was conveying government appointees and staff from the Office of the Deputy Governor, veered off its lane near an Army checkpoint in Ugep before hitting sandbag barricades.
The source also attributed the accident to brake failure and said other vehicles in the convoy were damaged.
Several members of the convoy were reportedly injured in the incident, although the exact number and severity of the injuries could not be independently verified.
Efforts to obtain further details from other government officials were unsuccessful at the time of filing the report.
