SOKOTO — The Sokoto State Command of the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have strengthened their partnership to intensify operations against drug trafficking and crimes linked to substance abuse.
The renewed collaboration was reaffirmed during a strategic visit by the Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, to the NDLEA State Command, aimed at boosting inter-agency coordination in addressing insecurity.
CP Shaffa, who recently assumed office with a commitment to deploy intelligence-led and technology-driven policing, was received by the NDLEA State Commander, CN Mustapha Muhammad Gidado. Both officials used the opportunity to assess the security situation in the state, with particular focus on the connection between drug abuse and crimes such as banditry, kidnapping and theft.
They highlighted recent NDLEA operations that led to the seizure of over 490 kilograms of cannabis and 17,568 bottles of codeine syrup, describing the successes as evidence of the impact of coordinated enforcement and intelligence sharing.
Speaking during the meeting, CP Shaffa underscored the central role of drug abuse in driving criminal activities, stressing the need for a more integrated operational approach.
“Drug abuse is the oxygen fuelling the fire of criminality we confront daily. This engagement goes beyond routine collaboration; it is about fully integrating our tactical operations,” he said.
He outlined key measures to strengthen cooperation, including joint raids on drug hubs and criminal hideouts, real-time intelligence sharing between police and NDLEA operatives, and expanded public sensitisation campaigns targeting youth involvement in drug abuse.
The police commissioner expressed confidence that stronger collaboration, backed by technology and stakeholder engagement, would enhance crime prevention and improve public safety.
In his remarks, NDLEA Commander Gidado described the initiative as a significant step in reinforcing the fight against drug-related crimes. He pledged the agency’s continued support in dismantling drug networks and safeguarding communities.
“The synergy between the NDLEA and the Police remains our most potent weapon against drug cartels. With our combined operational strength, Sokoto will become increasingly difficult for traffickers to operate,” he said.
Gidado also commended the Police Command for providing critical support during high-risk NDLEA operations.
Both agencies agreed to sustain regular communication and institutionalise monthly strategy sessions to stay ahead of evolving criminal tactics, while reaffirming their commitment to protecting communities and curbing drug abuse, particularly among young people.
Security analysts note that the enhanced collaboration reflects a wider national effort to tackle the growing influence of drug abuse in fuelling violent crimes across Nigeria.
