The political camp of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has been unsettled following the outcome of the screening exercise conducted by the All Progressives Congress, APC, for aspirants seeking to contest the State House of Assembly election.
The APC Screening Committee for the Rivers State House of Assembly carried out the exercise at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt over the weekend.
The committee, chaired by Rt. Hon. Muraina Ajibola, reportedly did not clear 63 aspirants believed to be loyal to Governor Fubara.
Sources familiar with the exercise said only 33 aspirants, alleged to be aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, were cleared by the panel.
It was gathered that a total of 98 aspirants participated in the screening process.
According to reports from the committee, the exercise was generally orderly but was affected by alleged attempts at bribery and issues relating to the eligibility of some aspirants.
The development has reportedly generated tension among supporters of the governor, with some alleging that the outcome of the screening exercise had been predetermined.
