Candidates contesting the forthcoming Osun State governorship election and their political parties have signed a peace accord aimed at ensuring a peaceful and credible poll.
The accord, facilitated by Bishop Matthew Kukah, was signed during a ceremony held at the Oasis Event Centre in Osogbo, with representatives of all participating political parties in attendance.
Governor Ademola Adeleke attended the event in person, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, was represented by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, and his running mate, Kayode Adereti. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate was represented by the party’s chairman, Azeez Adesiji.
Chairman of the National Peace Committee, former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, represented by former Chief of Defence Staff, General Martin Luther Agwai, urged political parties and their supporters to conduct campaigns peacefully and avoid violence, hate speech and misinformation.
He stressed that no political victory was worth the loss of human lives and called on all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and the democratic process.
Speaking after the signing, Bishop Kukah reminded candidates that the agreement was a solemn commitment to the people of Osun State and urged them to honour their pledges throughout the electoral process.
He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and the media to play their respective roles in ensuring peaceful elections.
Kukah said history would judge political actors not by signing the accord but by faithfully implementing its provisions before, during and after the election.
