The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed Federal Controllers of Works across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to put Nigerians first and take responsibility for the quality of federal road projects.
Umahi gave the charge on Wednesday during the August edition of the ministry’s monthly meeting with Controllers of Works at its headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
The meeting is held to review the progress of federal road projects, address challenges and improve supervision.
The minister urged the controllers to take greater interest in construction and continuously improve their professional knowledge and practical skills.
He said, “Take interest in the construction. Read your books to improve. I learn a lot from the site, not from the office.”
Umahi also directed them to spend more time at project sites, understand developments on the ground and maintain close relationships with communities affected by federal road projects.
He said effective public service should be driven by commitment to the welfare of citizens.
“When you have passion for the people, you put God first. God will make you do more things you don’t even know how to do,” he said.
Recalling his experience as governor of Ebonyi State, Umahi said his achievements in office were driven by faith and commitment to the people.
“When you put the people first, you are putting God first. You will enjoy your job.
You will be happy with the job. As you are putting God and the people first, you are creating everlasting blessing for your family,” he said.
The minister charged the controllers to remain diligent, stressing that the ultimate measure of federal road projects should be their impact on Nigerians.
