At least one person was feared killed and several others injured following an attack on communities in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly occurred around 2:30pm on Wednesday along the Sabon Gari–Mangu Halle–Mai Rana–Arangai–Mararaban Kantoma axis.
Residents, particularly women and children, were said to have fled their homes as tension gripped the affected communities.
A source who travelled through the area said several settlements appeared deserted following the attack.
“Travelling through Sabon Gari, Mangu Halle, through to Mai Rana, Arangai and Mararaban Kantoma, I noticed there is high tension,” the source said.
The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, MDA, and former State Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Bulus Dabit, confirmed that an attack occurred and said several people were injured.
Dabit said some villages were burnt during the incident while youths who mobilised to defend their communities were also attacked.
“Some of our villages were burnt down. The youth who went to protect the village were injured,” he said.
He added that one person was believed to have been killed, although the exact casualty figure remained unclear.
“I know that one person died, but by now, I don’t know how many,” he said.
Dabit expressed concern about the scale of the attack, saying it appeared to be more than an isolated dispute.
“It is not something that was caused by two people who are fighting,” he said.
He said the level of mobilisation suggested that there could be more to the incident than was immediately apparent.
“It is not a Mangu issue. I think the level of this kind of attack, the way the mobilisation is, it may be more than just one incident. There may be more to it than what we are experiencing,” he said.
Dabit said security personnel had been deployed to the affected communities and expressed hope that the situation would remain calm.
He also appealed to the newly deployed Commissioner of Police in Plateau State to take decisive measures to prevent further attacks.
As of the time of filing the report, the exact number of casualties could not be independently confirmed, while efforts to obtain further reactions from security agencies were unsuccessful.
