Jos — Gunmen have attacked Rakung village in Ropp District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving one person injured and destroying more than 15 hectares of farmland.
The attack, which reportedly occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, was confirmed by the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) through its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, in a statement issued in Jos.
The group, under the leadership of Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a violent assault on a peaceful farming community.
“Following the attack, one person sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. Over 15 hectares of farmland cultivated with various cash crops were deliberately destroyed by the attackers,” the statement said.
The association alleged that the destruction of farmlands forms part of a recurring pattern of attacks aimed at displacing indigenous residents, disrupting livelihoods, and instilling fear in affected communities.
It further described the incident as a direct blow to food production efforts, noting that many farmers were already struggling to ensure food security in the area.
The group called on security agencies to immediately track down and arrest those responsible, insisting that perpetrators must be brought to justice to prevent further attacks.
“It is unacceptable that such acts continue to occur with little or no consequence for those responsible,” the statement added.
The association also urged government authorities at all levels to strengthen security around vulnerable communities in Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau State facing persistent violence.
It further appealed for urgent humanitarian intervention, particularly medical support for victims and assistance to help farmers recover from the destruction of their crops.
In a related development, the group also reported that one person was declared missing in Jos community on Friday morning, adding to growing concerns over insecurity in the area.
